This year's theme at SLHS is "SPIRIT OF EXCELLENCE." What are some ways you can cultivate a spirit of excellence in all you do?
In AVID, we are focusing on the Big Idea of VOICE: How can you "find your VOICE and inspire others to find theirs," as Stephen Covey exhorts?

Big Idea of CHANGE:
"It's never too late to be who you might have been." - George Eliot
Essential Questions:
What causes change?
Why is change necessary?
How has human nature changed over time? Or has it?
AVID quote to consider as an EQ: "What will you do with your one wild and precious life?" - Mary Oliver
Why should you care?
We must be aware of how CHANGE occurs in our lives in order to make connections between the world around us and our personal journeys. In order to truly understand what we read, we have to connect the broader context of the texts with how it is relevant to the human experience.
Where are we going?
We will focus on argument but also rhetorical analysis and synthesis as we spiral back and forth between current readings and making connections to the past. We are nearing the end of the school year. Let's finish strong.
Thought of the Week:
Week of 5/26: "Always remember that you are a human being with a soul and the divine gift of articulate speech!" -Pygmalion, by George Bernard Shaw
Week of 5/18: "If you don't want to be treated like a flower girl, then don't act like a flower girl." - Pygmalion, by George Bernard Shaw
Journals are required every day. Weekly vocabulary, voice lessons, and SAT questions of the day will not take place to make time for review and larger projects/essays.
